Eye problems in pets can get worse quickly, so early care matters. Charis Vets in Budaiya offers eye examinations, medical treatment and eye surgery for dogs and cats in Bahrain, including cataract surgery.
Eye signs you should never ignore
Book an eye check the same day if you notice:
- Squinting or keeping an eye closed
- Discharge from one or both eyes
- A red eye
Also watch for cloudiness, rubbing or pawing at the eye, and bumping into things.
Common eye problems we treat
- Corneal injuries and ulcers: scratches or wounds on the clear front surface of the eye. They are painful and can deepen fast without treatment.
- Dry eye (KCS): the eye does not make enough tears, which leads to sticky discharge, redness and damage to the cornea over time.
- Cataracts: clouding of the lens that can lead to blindness.
- Cherry eye and eyelid problems: such as entropion, where the eyelid rolls inwards and the lashes rub the eye.
- Glaucoma: raised pressure inside the eye, which is painful and needs urgent care.
Eye procedures at our clinic
- Cataract surgery using phacoemulsification
- Corneal grafts
- PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment for corneal ulcers
- Cherry eye surgery
- Eyelid surgery, including entropion correction
- Glaucoma care
Specialist eye equipment
Phacoemulsification (phaco) is the modern way to remove a cataract. The cloudy lens is broken up with ultrasound and removed through a very small incision. A slit lamp biomicroscope gives our vets a highly magnified view of the front of the eye, so small injuries and early disease are easier to spot.

Frequently asked questions
Is a cloudy eye always a cataract?
No. Cloudiness can also come from normal ageing changes, corneal problems or glaucoma. An eye exam is needed to tell the difference.
Can I use human eye drops on my pet?
No. Some human drops can make certain eye problems worse. Please have your pet checked first.
Is eye surgery safe for older pets?
Many older pets have eye surgery safely. We check your pet’s general health and plan the anaesthetic carefully before any procedure.
