Even when your pet seems perfectly healthy, a regular wellness exam is one of the best things you can do for them. Many problems can be found early, when they are quicker, easier and less costly to treat.
What happens at a wellness exam
Our vet will give your pet a thorough, nose-to-tail check, which usually includes:
- Weight and body condition
- Eyes, ears, skin and coat
- Teeth and gums
- Heart and lungs
- Joints and mobility
- A chat about diet, behaviour and any changes you have noticed
Depending on your pet’s age and health, our vet may also suggest blood or urine tests, vaccinations or parasite prevention.
How often should my pet have a wellness exam?
Most adult pets benefit from a check-up at least once a year. Older pets, and pets with ongoing health conditions, often need checks more often. Our vet will recommend what is right for your pet.
Wellness care for older pets
As pets age, problems such as arthritis, dental disease, kidney disease and weight changes become more common, and they often develop slowly. Regular checks help us keep older pets comfortable and active. For pets nearing the end of life, see our hospice and end-of-life care.
Check-ups at home
Wellness exams can also be done during a home visit, which many cats and anxious pets find much less stressful. Our guide Taking your cat to the vet has more tips.
Frequently asked questions
My pet seems healthy. Do they still need a check-up?
Yes. Pets are good at hiding illness, and many conditions show no obvious signs at first.
What should I bring?
Any previous medical records, a list of the food and medicines your pet takes, and a note of anything you have noticed.
