Hydrotherapy uses exercise in water to help dogs lose weight, move more easily and recover after surgery. At Charis Vets in Budaiya, sessions take place in our hydrotherapy pool and are planned and supervised by our team.
Why dogs come for hydrotherapy
- Weight loss: burning calories with very little strain on the joints.
- Mobility problems: such as arthritis and age-related stiffness.
- Recovery after surgery: rebuilding muscle and movement once the wound has healed.
- Cruciate (ACL) injury recovery: one of the most common reasons, before or after cruciate surgery.
How hydrotherapy helps
Water supports much of your dog’s body weight, so sore joints can move without the pounding of exercise on land. At the same time, the water’s resistance makes muscles work harder, building strength and fitness. It is also a useful way to keep dogs active during Bahrain’s hot summer months, when outdoor walks are limited.
What to expect
A vet check first
Every dog needs a vet check before starting hydrotherapy. Our vet makes sure it is safe for your dog, sets goals and recommends how many sessions are likely to help.
Sessions
A typical session lasts 30 to 45 minutes in our pool. Your dog is supported throughout and sessions are tailored to their condition, fitness and confidence in the water. We track progress over the course of treatment.
Part of a full recovery plan
Hydrotherapy works best alongside other care. Dogs recovering from orthopaedic or spinal surgery often start hydrotherapy once their vet confirms the wound has healed, and overweight dogs benefit from combining it with a diet plan. Read about cruciate ligament surgery and recovery.
Frequently asked questions
Does my dog need to be able to swim?
No. Our team supports your dog in the water at all times.
How many sessions will my dog need?
It depends on the condition and your dog’s progress. Our vet will recommend a plan after the first check.
Is hydrotherapy safe after surgery?
Yes, once the wound has healed and your vet confirms it is safe. It is one of the gentlest ways to rebuild strength after an operation.
Do you offer hydrotherapy for cats?
Our hydrotherapy service is for dogs. If your cat has mobility problems, our vets can advise on other options.
