Keyhole surgery, also called laparoscopic surgery, lets our vets operate through two or three small incisions instead of one long cut. A thin camera shows the inside of the abdomen on a screen, and fine instruments do the work. For most pets this means a smaller wound, less discomfort and a quicker return to normal life.
Charis Vets in Budaiya has carried out more than 50 keyhole procedures for pets in Bahrain.
Keyhole procedures we offer
- Keyhole spay: neutering female dogs through small incisions rather than an open abdominal wound.
- Retained testicle surgery: finding and removing a testicle that has stayed inside the abdomen instead of moving down into the scrotum (cryptorchidism). Retained testicles have a higher risk of becoming cancerous later in life, so removal is usually recommended.
- Gastropexy (stomach tack): fixing the stomach to the body wall to help prevent it twisting (gastric dilatation volvulus, or GDV). This is often advised for large, deep-chested breeds and can sometimes be done at the same time as a keyhole spay.
- Biopsies: taking small tissue samples from inside the abdomen to reach a diagnosis without major open surgery.
Why choose keyhole surgery?
- Smaller wounds: two or three small incisions heal faster and are less tempting for pets to lick.
- Home the same day: most pets go home on the day of their operation.
- Shorter rest: most pets need around 2 to 3 days of quiet rest, compared with the longer period of restricted activity usually needed after open surgery.
Is keyhole surgery right for every pet?
Not always. Our vet will check whether it is the best choice for your pet at the consultation. Keyhole surgery is usually not suitable for:
- Very small patients, under about 5 kg
- Pets with damage to the diaphragm, for example after a road accident
- Removal of large tumours, which needs open surgery
If keyhole surgery is not the right option, we will explain why and talk you through traditional surgery instead.
What to expect
Before surgery
Your pet will have a consultation and a pre-anaesthetic check. We will give you clear instructions on when to stop food and water the night before.
On the day
Your pet is admitted in the morning, and most go home the same day once they are awake and comfortable.
At home
Keep your pet quiet for the first 2 to 3 days, stop them licking the small wounds, and come back for a wound check when advised. Our guide Keyhole spay recovery: what to expect at home, day by day walks you through it.
Frequently asked questions
Can cats have keyhole surgery?
Many cats weigh less than 5 kg, which is usually too small for keyhole surgery. Our vet will advise on the best option for your cat.
Is keyhole surgery more expensive than open surgery?
It can cost more because of the specialist equipment and training involved. Contact us for a quote for your pet.
Can my dog have a gastropexy at the same time as a spay?
Often, yes. Ask our vet at the consultation, especially if you have a large, deep-chested breed.
